If you’re like most people, you have a host of things and people begging for and outright demanding your time. The things that create personal happiness are frequently pushed to the bottom of your to-do list.
Serving others is a wonderful thing. I recommend it on my blog as a way to add joy and meaning to your life. However, taking care of yourself is important, too. In fact, if you want to increase how happy you are and have it last, self-care is vital.
Why Making Yourself A Priority Matters When It Comes To Your Happiness
Even if you love every second of your day right now—you roll out of bed excited about what you get to do and who you spend your time with; you know what it is to feel joy, love, and happiness; and you’re thrilled to make a positive difference for others each day—you need to take care of yourself, too.
Even at your best, you need rest, recovery, support, and nourishment. If all you ever do is serve others, eventually you’ll empty your tank.
An empty tank is empty. It doesn’t matter if it got that way out of loving service or drudgery. If you don’t take care of yourself, one day you’ll be too sick and tired to do the things you love with and for the people you love.
Do It Every Day
Tend to your long-term happiness by giving yourself a few minutes of pure “me time” each day. Make time that allows you simply to be.
You can connect with nature, do a little exercise, snuggle with someone you love, sit in the sunshine, enjoy your favorite coffee or tea, listen to your favorite music, or whatever it is that lets you rest, recover, and nourish yourself.
Throw in the occasional day or week of getting away when you can, but those times aren’t as important as your day-to-day refresh and revive moments.
Even if it’s just five to ten minutes, make self-care a priority so that you can live as fully and love as deeply as you want for as long as possible.
